Slug line breakdown
If you aren't from the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area, you
probably have no clue what the “slug line” is.
What is the slug line you may ask?!
It’s an organized hitch-hiking line. Yes, I mean it. Lol We
literally ride with complete strangers.
Don’t believe me? They even have a website for it: http://www.slug-lines.com/
Crazy, I know. I’ve only been catching rides with strangers for
going on 9 years.
I’m not sure why I haven’t shared this before, because I can write
a book about my rides to and from work.
I get up before the Sun rises. I drive to a commuter lot and park
my truck. I then stand in line to wait for a car.
The wait can range anywhere from 5 minutes to almost 2 hours. It
all depends on the weather and holidays.
Now, the purpose of “slugging” is so that the driver can get onto
the express lanes for free and we (the sluggers) get a free ride. Win-win
situation J
When I first started slugging, I only caught a ride to the Pentagon
metro station. Over time, I began going to other metro stations (I could’ve
saved half of the time commuting, if I did that from the beginning. Lol).
Do I like slugging? Yes and no
I love all of the pictures of the Sun rise and Sun sets I’ve taken
over the years. I love the cool people I’ve met over time. I love the “free”
ride (it’s like test driving different car models). I love how the “slugs” work
together to get rides on long morning/afternoons.
I don’t care too much for the chatter boxes (in car or in line). I
don’t care too much for some of the vehicles I get into (odor, messy, etc). I
don’t care too much for the long wait sometimes. I don’t care too much for the
fall/winter (get rained/snowed on) time when standing in line.
